Touring Crate Materials
Pod draw on a wide range of structural and archival materials when designing and fabricating its touring crates. Outlined below are descriptions of the basic materials we use in crate construction.
All plywood used in Pod products is produced from renewable plantation grown Pinus Radiata, and complies with the relevant standards to meet Australian and New Zealand building codes. Pod crates are generally clad in a 9mm ply material, but this can be changed according to the clients requirements.
All timber used in the construction of crates and associated products is kiln dried Radiata Pine supplied from an F.S.C, and ISPM 15 certified timber mill. See the Timber Certification page for details about these environmental and quarantine standards.
All timber used is now finger jointed which means stable, knot free and sap free timber in all our products. The use of finger jointed timber also minimizes wastage at the mill and in our workshop.
The right choice of internal packing materials is vital, firstly to ensure the correct amount of support is given to the object, and secondly that the foam itself will not damage the item you are trying to protect.
Pod use a wide range of closed cell Polyethylene foams for archival packing. Polyethylene foams such as Zotefoam or Ethafoam provide the shock and vibration absorption necessary to protect your object from the forces it will encounter during transit. These foams are nitrogen or butane blown, rather than chemically formed which means they will not degrade and release potentially harmful gas that could affect the object you are trying to protect. These foams are used widely in Pod packing, along with a range of other archivally sound materials, all chosen to provide the best protection possible to your art or object.
